Gideon Camping

I'm Gideon, and I camp out of a truck on nights that drop near freezing. After waking up cold in gear that cost far more than it should have, I went looking for how people stayed warm before any of it existed. Most of what's in these books comes from old field sources that are still in print: Nessmuk's Woodcraft from 1884, Horace Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft from 1906, and the U.S. Army survival field manuals. I tested the methods myself, one at a time, and kept notes on what worked, what didn't, and where a method becomes unsafe. The notebook got long enough that it needed an order, so I wrote it down properly. The detail I'm fondest of: the first night I slept straight through, the only thing I'd changed was what was under me.

Why I Wrote This Down

I didn't set out to write books. I set out to stop waking up cold. What I found was that the problem was rarely the price of the equipment. It was knowing how heat moves, where it leaks and how to hold it. Those are old skills, and most of us were never taught them. They weren't passed down; they were replaced by things you buy. So I gathered what I learned into three short volumes. The first covers staying warm. The second covers power and cooking without depending on a big battery. The third ties it together into one kit you can take on every trip. None of it asks you to throw away what you own. It asks you to understand it. If you've ever lain awake at three in the morning wondering what you were doing wrong, this is written for you.

Frequently asked questions

I've already spent good money on pads, bags and heaters and still froze. Why would a book fix that?+
Gear only works if heat isn't leaving by another route. Volume I explains the four ways your body loses heat and why a good bag on cold ground can still fail. Once you know where the heat is going, you can use the gear you already own better, or fix the gap with materials that cost next to nothing.
Do I have to be young or fit to use these methods?+
No. The methods are about insulation, placement and planning, not strength. Many are built around a truck, car or RV you drive to camp.
Is this safe? Fire and heat near a tent worry me.+
Safety is covered directly, including where old methods become dangerous. You'll find clear warnings on fire, hot materials and enclosed spaces, and when not to use a method at all.
Will you try to sell me gear afterward?+
No. The books don't recommend expensive equipment. The whole point is using what you already own or find on site.
Is this a beginner checklist?+
No. Each book explains why something works, so you can adapt it to your own conditions instead of following a list.
What format are the books in?+
They are digital books you can read on a phone, tablet or computer, or print for the truck.

Sleep warm on skill, not on spending.

Three practical books on warmth, power and one kit that works on every trip.
